What Causes Wrinkles After Putting on Foundation?

Nearly every woman will have experienced the effect of foundation causing wrinkles to appear, seemingly out of nowhere, on their skin. Obviously, this is something we all want to avoid – and don’t worry! We’ve identified what causes it. Plus, we’ve got a simple guide for you to follow so it’ll never happen again.

So, you’ve applied a smooth layer of foundation on your face and you’re ready to begin applying the rest of your makeup when out of the corner of your eye, you see it: a wrinkle. A tiny little crease on your forehead, cheek or chin that sticks out like a sore thumb on your face. So now you’ve got to remove your makeup and reapply and hope the wrinkle doesn’t pop up again.

Good news – you can eliminate this problem completely!

Post-foundation wrinkles

The most common cause of wrinkles appearing after applying foundation is applying a thick layer of it. With foundation, the general rule of thumb is: the thinner the better.

Of course, not all of us are blessed with nearly flawless skin and a slightly thicker layer of foundation is necessary to hide all the blemishes, aging spots and what have you. If this is the case, start out with a teeny bit of foundation (half a pea on your forehead, cheeks, and chin as well as the top of your nose), blend it in, and then layer more over it. This will greatly reduce any wrinkles or creases.

Use a makeup sponge or brush to apply and blend your foundation! Using your fingers can lead the makeup to look obvious and splotchy, plus, it’s much easier to get an even blend with a sponge or brush. Make sure your makeup tools are clean and dry before you use them, though, and be sure to clean them thoroughly after each use.

Another common foundation-related mistake is using a foundation that has gray or yellow tones, or a foundation that doesn’t match your skin tone. These can look extremely “fake” as if you’re wearing a caked-on mask, when what you want is a more natural look.

Foundation-induced wrinkles

Sometimes, you may notice a wrinkle appearing after you’ve wiped all your makeup off. This is probably due to aging or drying chemicals in your foundation. Let’s take a look at the most notorious ones.

  1. Powders – Not only do powders dry your skin out and create wrinkles, they emphasize upon wrinkles that are already there. Try to avoid foundations that have powders in them, especially if you have mature skin.
  2. Alcohol – Yep, alcohol is used in foundations (as well as many other skincare products)! This chemical is extremely drying and just plain not good for your skin. It can create wrinkles in your skin as well as cause pimples, dryness, and other skin issues.
  3. Parabens – Parabens are used as preservatives to increase the shelf life of your foundation, however, they are extremely toxic to your skin. They have been proven to react with UV rays (specifically, UVB rays) to cause irreparable skin damage by permanently damaging your DNA. They will thus make your skin age faster, as well as promote dryness and dullness.

Foundation-related skin care tips:

Even the most organic, natural foundations out there will still have negative effects on your skin if you do not follow a proper skincare regimen. Your skin needs nutrients to be healthy and youthful, and the most important nutrient it needs is oxygen. Foundation blocks oxygen from reaching your skin cells, so you will need to nourish your skin daily to counteract its negative effects.

Remove your foundation every single night. No matter how tired you are, no matter how appealing your bed looks, you must remove all of your makeup before you go to bed. This will allow your skin to repair overnight and look fresh and revitalized for the next day. Leaving foundation on your skin for prolonged periods without breaks can clog your pores, causing pimples and acne, and dry your skin out, causing wrinkles.

We understand that some nights you’re just too tired to go through the whole makeup removal process, so keep a box of makeup wipes handy. Wipe your face with a makeup wipe before you collapse into bed – this isn’t an ideal method, but it’ll work fine as long as you do it once in a while. If you are really keen about good foundations for sensitive skin, you could give bye bye foundation a shot to get the right type of foundation.

Wash your face twice a day! Use a gentle cleanser both in the morning and at night to remove any dirt, oil or traces of makeup lingering on your skin. Using a toner afterward to truly cleanse your pores is recommended, but not required. Moisturizing, however, is necessary, as washing your face strips it of its natural oils and can leave it dry and dull (also causing premature wrinkles!), so apply a light lotion designed for facial skin after each wash. This will hydrate your face so you can have smooth and flawless skin.

We hope our guide has helped you with being wrinkle-free!

A Secret of Herbal Skin Care Products

Herbal skin care products are all over today. Here is one important natural ingredient that would be great to have in any skin care line.

Herbal skin care products are all over in the market today. Wherever you look, you will find yourself faced with a wide array of products that offer to give your skin the best care and nourishment it needs. But is it that easy to believe that all these products can give your skin exactly what it needs? Well, think again.

Herbal skin care formulations have not been created the same. Just like in any other market, companies try to compete with each other by offering a formulation which can be considered the best among the best. These companies (at least the good ones) invest in skin care research and technology to be able to offer the best formulation possible. One of the breakthrough ingredients that have been receiving much rave in the recent years is the ingredient called Active Manuka Honey.

What is Active Manuka Honey?

Manuka honey is essentially a kind of honey which can be extracted only in New Zealand. As might be suggested from its name, it is honey produced by bees that feed on the Manuka plant. The Manuka plant, in turn, is a relative of the very popular tea tree oil, which is used in many anti-acne formulations we know today.

Benefits of This Special Honey

Manuka honey is clinically and scientifically proven to provide the skin ultimate healing properties. As a matter of fact, honey in itself has been used for centuries by many generations because of its wonderful benefits. Even Cleopatra and the ancient beauties have been known to apply it regularly. Science has now found out the reason why: honey is naturally rich in enzymes that give it potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

More recently, researchers based in New Zealand has found that a special type of honey gathered in areas rich in Manuka bush, have even more remarkable healing abilities. Manuka, being a close relative of tea tree oil, also have potent antibacterial properties. The healing benefits of honey reinforced by the antibacterial effects of Manuka gives way to what scientists call the Unique Manuka Factor or UMF.

How Manuka Honey Helps the Skin

Manuka honey, which has genuine active UMF, is known to provide health-giving properties to the skin. Other than healing, active Manuka Honey has also been found to provide other skin benefits:

1. When applied topically, Manuka honey can support and reinforce the skin’s natural renewal process.

2. It can help form stronger collagen and elastin, which are both important components that keep skin elasticity

3. It is also rich in natural antioxidants that protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, including wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity.

Research has also established Manuka honey contains much higher amounts of antioxidants than ordinary honey, or any other type of honey for that matter. It is also found to have excellent ability to penetrate through the inner layers of the skin to rejuvenate and nourish it where it matters.

Excellent herbal skin care products should contain potent ingredients like Active Manuka honey. If you are using one that does not have this natural component, then you are missing out on a lot of goodness your skin can experience.

The Need For Cosmetic Surgeries And Skin Care Procedures

Cosmetic surgeries seem to be an innovation of the modern age; though that’s not exactly the case. Cosmetic Surgery has been around for much longer than most people consider it to be.

The earliest known instance of a cosmetic surgical procedure dates back to 6th century BC and can be found in Sushruta-Samhita, a very important medical text from ancient India responsible for the cosmetic advancements in India and rest of the world.

The text is attributed to Sushruta, and its best contribution to plastic surgery is rhinoplasty, i.e. the reconstruction of the nose. The influential nature of Sushruta-Samhita, its theories about medicine, anatomical knowledge and surgical procedures still hold true today.

The primary focus of this historical review was not to highlight Sushruta’s dexterity and advanced knowledge, but to lay stress on the fact that we have been using cosmetic skin care procedures for centuries, and it would be too erroneous to believe otherwise.

This brings us to another important question, why.

What motivates people to go under the knife and choose cosmetic sugeries?

The cosmetic industry is booming. In just less than a decade, it’s undergone a 5-fold increase. This is particularly so because of the unprecedented boom in non-surgical procedures such as botox, dermal fillers, etc.

With more and more of us jumping in to slow down our aging, it seems that the idea of aging gracefully is now anathema to most.

There are 2 major reasons as to why someone would shed the inhibition and opt for a surgical treatment; either to mask an accident or an illness that instilled a sense of disfigurement in the patient or to simply enhance and improve their aesthetic appearance, which, in most cases, is the prevalent scenario.

It’s equally important for the cosmetic dermatologist to know the reasons as well. Firstly, they need to determine if they are capable of providing the desired service or not, and secondly, to determine if the chosen procedure would be of any benefit or not.

As it so happens, some people would want their nose to look like a particular celebrity which, given the diversity and uniqueness in body shapes, is not always possible.

As with the second case, some patients do not necessarily require a surgery. Many a time, people with hampered self-esteem knock our doors. It’s important for them to understand that the void comes from within and no amount of superficial procedures would make them feel any better. In serious cases, it becomes imperative to turn such patients down.

The reasons you possess for wanting a cosmetic procedure done would determine if the cosmetic dermatologist agrees to operate or not.

Ultimately, it all boils down to a few legitimate reasons. These include recovering from bad genes, reversing the signs of aging and sun damage, fix physical flaws, treat acne scars and social validation. However, if you’re just aiming for perfection, are depressed or straight up bored and still want to opt for a cosmetic surgical procedure, please bear in mind that you wouldn’t be doing yourself any good.

Effective Management of Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin disorders, affecting people of all races and ages. It is a chronic inflammatory disease involving the pilosebaceous unit of the skin.

Its prevalence among those aged 12 to 24 years is estimated to be 85%, although it can persist beyond young adulthood despite treatment. The disease is more common and more severe in males than in females.

Acne can be effectively treated but its response may sometimes be slow. There are some common principles of its management, which include following:

  • Don’t scratch or pick the spots.
  • Avoid excessively humid conditions such as working in an unventilated kitchen or tropical vacations as much as possible.
  • Stop smoking because nicotine increases sebum retention, forming comedones (blackheads and whiteheads).
  • Minimize the application of oils and cosmetics to the affected skin.
  • Avoid sunburn and protect your skin outdoors using a sunscreen and protective clothing.
  • Avoid abrasive skin treatment, which is likely to aggravate both comedones and inflammation.
  • Follow a low-glycaemic, low-protein and low-dairy diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Management of Acne –

The three steps in the management of acne are required for its success:

  • Establishing the type and severity of acne.
  • Selecting medication appropriate for the patient’s condition and skin type. In general, patients with oily skin benefit from solutions or gels, while those with dry skin do better with creams, lotions, or ointments.
  • Educating the patient about the disease, the different types of medications and their side effects, and expectations for improvement that are realistic.

Mild Acne –

Its management includes the following:

  • Gentle cleansing of the affected area with warm water and a mild soap.
  • Application benzoyl peroxide.
  • Application salicylic acid.

If above treatments do not work, see your doctor, who can give you a prescription for stronger lotions or creams and, if necessary, antibiotic lotion.

Moderate to Severe Acne –

Its management includes the following:

  • Application of benzoyl peroxide.
  • Drainage of large pimples and cysts by a doctor.
  • Application of prescription antibiotic gels, creams, or lotions.
  • Application of prescription retinoids.
  • Application of azelaic acid.
  • Taking prescription oral antibiotics
  • Taking prescription oral retinoids (such as isotretinoin).

Laser Resurfacing of Acne Scars –

Acne vulgaris frequently results in scarring. Acne scars can lead to physical disfigurement, having profound psychosocial impact on persons suffering from them. Early and effective treatment of acne is the best means to minimize and prevent acne scarring.

The technique of laser resurfacing requires to direct short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

It burns the face to create a new skin surface and reduce acne scars, but complete remodeling takes about 18 months. It has been noticed that up to 45% of all patients have temporary changes in skin color. But infections are rare. The procedure is up to 80% effective for shallow scars. But deep scars can be treated in several ways before or during laser resurfacing.

The Bottom Line –

Acne affects 85% of all adolescents and about 12% of adult women. Although it is a benign condition, acne can cause considerable morbidity, including pain, discomfort and scarring. It can also lead to depression and anxiety resulting in poor self-esteem. Laser resurfacing is emerging as an effective new treatment for acne scars.

Great Skin Care – Are Facial Toners Really That Important?

You may have heard skin care experts debating the pros and cons of using a facial toner. Some feel they are an essential part of any good skin care routine, while others feel they are unnecessary. For example, some dermatologists only recommend alcohol based toners for oily skin, and feel that all other skin types do not need them.

If you talk with most aestheticians, they will tell you that toners are an essential part of any skin care routine. So, where does the truth lie? Perhaps somewhere in between. I strongly believe that a truly gentle and well formulated toner, can be an important step in your skin care routine. Does this mean that you have to use it religiously day and night? Not necessarily. However, regular use can provide great benefits as I will discuss later on.

Toners have evolved a long way from the heavily laden alcohol based ones, although many still do exist. When I say alcohol, I am referring to drying alcohol such as SD Alcohol 40. In, this regard, some dermatologists may suggest these types of formulations for oily/very oily skin thinking the added alcohol will control excess oil production.

However, over the long term, alcohol based products may produce even more oil. Drying out your skin with harsh alcohol or even witch hazel can send a signal to your sebaceous glands to pump out even more oil. In this case, you may end up with skin that is not only more oily, but that may be prone to breakouts as well. Ingredients which dry and strip the skin can negatively affect your skin’s acid mantle, which in turn may cause further problems such as pimples or breakouts; slightly acidic skin can help prevent bacteria which can lead to breakouts.

There also seems to be some confusion regarding products marketed as “astringents” and those sold as “toners.” Is there any difference between the two? The experts appear to be divided on this subject. The term astringent usually describes products which contain alcohol, while toners do not. However, if you look at the myriad of products out there, you will still find many “toners” that contain alcohol.

Astringents are meant to help control oil production by removing it from the surface layer of skin. Some may or may not help to reduce the appearance of larger pores. However, most products labeled, “astringents” often have ingredients in addition to alcohol which can be further irritating or drying. For example, many contain peppermint, menthol and or eucalyptus.

Instead, use natural ingredients with mild astringent properties such as green tea and chamomile. So what are the potential benefits of using a well formulated gentle, alcohol free toner?

KEEPING YOUR SKIN’S ACID MANTLE HEALTHY

A well formulated toner should always have a slightly acidic pH. This is close to your skin’s pH when it is balanced and healthy. A toner can help restore your skin’s pH after cleansing (if you used a more alkaline cleanser). pH can also be negatively affected by a poor diet, stress and environmental factors.

REMOVING ANY LAST TRACES OF MAKE-UP

A gentle toner can remove any minute traces of makeup which may have been left behind. If you sometimes find a tiny bit of make-up left on your cotton pad, it does not necessarily mean your cleanser is ineffective. While very strong alkaline cleansers may make your face feel squeaky clean, they will also dry it and strip your skin’s acid mantle. Make sure you also use a cleanser that is gentle with a slightly acidic pH.

HYDRATION

A gentle toner can supply your skin with oil-free moisture. Products with ample amounts of ingredients such as aloe vera or natural humectants can help to instantly moisturize skin after cleansing. In this case, you may not need as much moisturizer, or in the case of oily skin, none at all, particularly at bedtime.

ANTI-AGING BENEFITS

Adding antioxidants with anti-aging ingredients such as resveratrol, green tea, and spirulina may help keep skin looking younger. Additional ingredients which may help brighten skin such as bilberry and Vitamin B 3, can be very helpful as well. These types of ingredients are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Toners may also help your moisturizer or any treatment product absorb better.

GO FRAGRANCE FREE

Always use a toner that is fragrance free. Many people react to fragrance, most commonly from some type of allergic reaction. There is never a reason to use toners with synthetic fragrances or strong essential oils. Some ingredients such as organic aloe vera provides a gentle, beautiful soft scent without added fragrance.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

If your skin is dry, using a toner in the morning may be all you need. After applying toner, use a good moisturizer followed by a sunblock with an SPF 15 or higher.

SOOTHING BENEFITS

Using a super gentle and soothing toner can be a great step after using exfoliants such as glycolic acid. Healing and nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera and cucumber can provide both moisturizing and healing properties.

Using a gentle toner free of alcohol, fragrance and artificial colors can provide a wonderful step in your skin care regimen. Not only can it provide additional gentle cleansing benefits, but it may help keep skin more hydrated and younger looking.

Decoding the Natural Skin-Care Myth

It is like clockwork, when a good thing such as organic living turns into a trend and every label you see starts touting all-natural, earthy goodness. In the case of cosmetics and skincare products, the label may say all-natural, but how do you know it's the real deal?

There really is no guarantee that you are getting natural skincare from these so called all-natural lotions. Many times such concoctions are not free of synthetic preservatives and have unnecessary fragrances. No doubt about it natural and organic products are more popular than ever, and most of the time you can find quality products. But, however, when it comes to your skin, take care about what substitutes you put on it.

If you use harsh creams on your skin you can do some serious damage to your face, which is not hard to do. Your facial skin is actually extremely thin, making it highly susceptible to a wide range of irritations and allergens. And when inferior products are used that contain preservatives like parabens, this can damage the skin's shield, causing dry, wrinkly skin. It's better to use natural skincare methods like day creams with active ingredients safe for daily use.

To use a facial cream on a daily basis, rely on one made with pure components. A series of products getting high marks for daily use and safety are those made with the wonder kelp wakame. A form of seaweed, wakame comes straight from the vast Sea of Japan. Those who embrace a macrobiotic diet promote it for its antioxidants and health benefits. And they're right. Although wakame can be ateen, it is widely used in facial creams because it increases the skin's elasticity, and acts as a good moisturizer. The latest testing also reveals that wakame is loaded with all kinds of vitamin B, helping it to soothe many types of skin inflammations.

In addition to discovering ingredients like wakame, the next step in understanding if a product is really natural is by decoding the label. Many organic treatments only contain small amounts of authentic herbal ingredients or extracts. Still, this does not guarantee safety or that they are made of wholly natural substances. If the predominant ingredient in a product is a petroleum-based substance or a chemical, you would be wise to make another choice. You can look for other clues, as well.

For instance, avoid creams and lotions that contain a lot of fragrances. Instead select natural skincare products that have a high percentage of active ingredients over fluff. Oftentimes, skincare solutions labeled "unscented" still contain irritating perfumes that do nothing to nourish your skin. To ensure that a product does not contain anything altering its scent it should be labeled "fragrance-free" or "without perfume."

Now that you know the basics about natural skincare products, you can make better decisions appropriate for your skin type. Remember, read the fine points on the label and choose natural ingredients over preservatives. The same advice holds true for your food choices, too.
