What Are the BRAT and CRAM Gastrointestinal Upset Diets?

The BRAT and CRAM gastrointestinal diets are often recommended by physicians for gastroenteritis and/or severe diarrhea.

The BRAT Acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast.

The CRAM Acronym stands for Cereals, Rice and Milk.

When a person is suffering from severe dehydration caused by diarrhea and/or vomiting, it is essential to replace the loss of body fluids. Years ago, doctor’s recommended the BRAT diet for several days until the gastroenteritis subsided, but now that diet has been replaced with the CRAM diet because it contains more protein and fat content than the BRAT diet.

Symptoms of dehydration include but are not limited to: dry mouth, lack of urination, dark urine, headache, rapid heart rate, dry skin, skin flushing, fatigue, fever, chills, extreme thirst and muscle spasms.

It is also important to start oral re-hydration therapy as soon as vomiting subsides and the patient can tolerate the intake of fluids. It is highly recommended that the patient start with caffeine-free soft drinks, low acidic juices and soup broths to help replace the fluid loss. These beverages are usually recommended for 24-48 hours.

Here is a suggested list of food and beverages to try:

plain oatmeal

rice cereals

cream of wheat

gelatins (jello)

chicken or beef broth

caffeine-free cola

Italian ice’s

popsicles (fruit juice or rootbeer flavors)

plain rice

If your symptoms persist for more than 24 hours or if they are accompanied by abdominal pain, blood in your emesis, blood in your stools or a fever over 101 degrees, it is time for you to call your Physician or visit your local hospital or health clinic.

No More Dandruff, Naturally

In the social and business arena, having dandruff can be a real detriment to your career and social life. It can be downright embarrassing. There are lots of over the counter remedies for dandruff, if you don’t mind putting chemicals on your scalp. Since the skin absorbs substances into itself and the warm water opens the pores of the skin, you can be doubly sure that whatever touches your skin will be absorbed.

You can find all kinds of toxic ingredients like resorcinol, P-Phenylenediamine, eugenol and ethanolamine in dandruff shampoo. DMDM hydantoin is a form of formaldehyde that is an intoxicant for the immune system and a toxic skin irritant, also found in dandruff products.

There can be a number of causes of dandruff, notably, too alkaline a pH on the scalp, yeast overgrowth from too high refined carbohydrates in the diet and dehydration and over-drying of the skin.

Over alkalinization of the skin and scalp can destroy the acid mantle, which is a slightly acidic waxy layer which is the first line of defense against surface invaders. Since the skin should be slightly acidic, it is wise to use pH balanced shampoos, so as not to destroy the protective properties of the skin and scalp.

The skin and scalp are chronically challenged to maintain their pH balance due to their constant exposure to environmental onslaughts. As they are the first line of exposure for any environmental substance and the skin cannot self-correct needed changes in pH, it is literally at the whim of whatever touches it. If we look at what potentially touches the hair and scalp, we find shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes, perm solutions, gels, mousses, glitters, hair sprays and stiffeners, which can all leave the skin in an alkaline state.

Realizing what these unnatural substances do to your skin is the first step. Finding a good pH balanced shampoo with no foaming agents and parabens in them is the next step. Finally rinsing your hair with an acidic based water is a good last step. This will keep your scalp on the acidic side of the pH scale. You can make an acidic water at home by mixing 2 parts of apple cider vinegar with six parts of warm water. If you don’t have long hair, you can mix two spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar to six spoonfuls of warm water.

The next step is to drink the right kind and amount of water. Right kind of water, you ask? Yes, some water is stagnant and dead. Although it is supposed to be clean, it seems to have little beneficial effect on the body. Water in, water out. No matter how much you seem to drink, it seems to all come out very quickly. If you were to switch to alkaline, ionized water, you would notice the difference in your skin and how your body feels within a week. The first day or so, you notice that most of the water you drink is being absorbed, you pee very little. Your cells are drinking deeply. Depending on the level of water in your body, you could take six months or more to fully hydrate, drinking the proper water. The average person needs half their body weight in ounces of water every day, three-quarters if the weather is hot.

The final consideration is your diet. Did you know that some people are more prone to yeast and other skin infections and irritations? They seem to have an over-sensitivity to carbohydrates, particularly sugars, wheat and any foods containing wheat. In the presence of these foods, the body produces sugars which feed Candida and other yeasts. The scalp is an ideal haven for yeasts to proliferate. The skin becomes irritated and itchy, producing flakes that cascade down onto the shoulders and the back. Most of the yeast build-up starts in the intestines where they are first exposed to their favorite foods. The toxins produced by the waste from these little critters creates an acidic condition in the body which produces many more symptoms than just dandruff. To wean yourself off the wheat and sugars may create what is called a kill-off. By gradually withdrawing the sugars and the wheat, the yeast starts to die because there is not enough for them to eat. As they die, they may start to produce fuzzy thinking, abdominal distress, headaches, a bad taste in your mouth, among other symptoms. Despite the mild discomfort, it is worth the effort. Drink lots of water to minimize the symptoms, hydrate your body and your skin and before you know it, you’ll be flake-free, without the chemicals.

Top 10 Tips on How to Stay Motivated During A Juice Fast

1. Learn all about juice fasting for weight loss before anything else

Do some research about the diet before committing to anything. Try to understand its purpose, its benefits and how exactly it works in the body to know if this is something you’re ready for – physically and mentally. Don’t start a diet unless you intend to stick to it until the very end.

2. List all the reasons you have for going through a juice fast

Before you begin with the diet, take the time to sit down and make a list of your personal reasons for wanting to do a juice fast. When you find yourself wanting to stop in the middle of your diet, bring the list out to remind yourself of why you made the commitment in the first place.

3. Look for inspiration

One effective way to do this is to read blogs of people who have achieved their weight loss goals through juicing. Reading success stories of other people experienced what you’re going through right now will be of great help.

4. Stay positive

Surround yourself with people who are there to support your goals such as family and friends. Being in a positive environment will help you reach your goals easier.

5. Plan your “meals” ahead

Make sure you have a meal plan ready for each day of your juice fast. Following a meal plan, knowing what to juice and when to drink the juice will help you focus on your weight loss goals.

6. Listen to your body

While on a juice fast, your body is going through cleansing and detoxification which may cause your energy levels to drop at times. When you feel tired, rest or sleep. When you feel hungry, drink juice or water. Learning to listen to your body’s needs will help you feel more at ease while juice fasting.

7. Do fun and relaxing activities

Doing things that help you relax will increase your weight loss motivation and will help take your mind off of cravings. Creating art, learning a new hobby, reading a good book or watching your favorite movie are some of the things you can try.

8. Be creative with your juices

One reason why some people stop at the middle of a fast is because they get bored with the taste of juice. This doesn’t have to be the case for you – juice different types of fruits and vegetables so that you also consume different tastes. Be creative with your combinations!

9. Think of your health

If you’re juicing for weight loss and find yourself about to fall off the wagon, think about your health. If you stop now, you won’t only lose a chance in weight loss, but you are also losing a great chance to become healthier.

10. Picture the benefits you’ll get after the juice fast

One of the best ways to feel motivated about something is to think about the rewards. Remember, the harder the challenge, the better the rewards at the end of the line.

Follow these simple tips while juicing for weight loss and you’ll surely complete your fast with flying colors.

A Fun Running Workout? Try The Photo Scavenger Hunt – As an Individual Or With a Running Group!

What exactly is, “The Photo Scavenger Hunt?” Well, simply put, you run around your town finding different things to take pictures of. You set a specific amount of time to run, and take as many pictures you can find on your scavenger hunt list.

I am a cross country and track coach. Every season we do this workout as an easy run. We break the team up into groups of five to eight runners. Each group gets a disposable camera. The group then gets a list of items that they need to take a picture of. The only catch with taking a photo is your entire group, minus the camera person, must be in the photo. That way we know that every runner from each group was at each location.

This workout works for individuals too. Just grab the camera, get a list of things to take photos of, and head on out the door. Make sure you set a specific time limit, so you don’t waste time searching for one thing too long. The idea is to get as many things as possible in a short amount of time. It is almost like running a bunch of mixed distance intervals with short recovery.

Here is an example list of items that we used for the past seasons cross country photo scavenger hunt. They were given 45 minutes to try and get as many pictures of these items. Now some things are picked specifically for the distance they need to run to get them. Smarter groups will plan their route so they can cover the least amount of ground and maximize the number of pictures taken.

1. By a restaurant.

2. With a stranger.

3. By some water.

4. In the woods.

5. Help pump some gas.

6. By a church.

7. On some swings.

8. Doing your favorite stretch.

9. By the water tower.

10. By your favorite car.

11. Doing yard work.

12. Helping a citizen cross the road.

13. By the railroad tracks.

14. On the football field.

15. By an ugly car.

Now, some of these locations are more than one mile from where we start. If our runners planned ahead, they could make a complete loop of five miles and cover each item on the list. This makes for a nine minute mile pace. Now add in the fact that you have to stop for the picture. You end up with a fun, yet somewhat challenging workout.

I never saw a group of kids get so excited to run before I did this. They asked to do it every week. I told them that it is quite expensive for the whole team to do this. Our bill was just under $100 for eight disposable cameras and then development of the pictures.

So there you have it. A true “fun” run. I am going to develop one on my own for training this summer. The world seems a lot brighter and more exciting when you have to look for certain things. It makes running fun and fresh, even for an old running veteran like me. Try it out. I bet you’ll like it.

Binaural Beats – Helpful "Real Thing" Or Myth?

If you’re wondering what the heck a “binaural beat” is you’re not alone. It is a phenomenon of human physiology, like where our ears are and how we process audio, that makes binaural beats real things. Yeah, I know, I answered that question a little early in the article, right? Actually I didn’t. I didn’t say if it was a helpful real thing. That part is yet unanswered. Curious? I hoped you would be.

First let me ask another question. Is hypnosis a helpful real thing? I know for absolute certain that trances are real. We go into and out of them all the time. But does that make them the doorway to changing deep-seated beliefs and behaviors in people. The scientist that lives in my head says there is some dearth of evidence on that last point. So it is with binaural beats. They are mathematically real, but do they actually DO anything for us?

When one of our ears is presented with a sine wave of a certain frequency, and the other ear is presented with a sine wave of a different frequency, our brains make it feel like we’re hearing a rhythmic thrumming or beating. We can control the source audio frequencies to speed up or slow down these beats in our heads. That part is undeniably and scientifically real. What may not be so real is the effect these beats have on our mood, minds, behavior, etc.

Neuroscience has lots of data to support the relationship between brainwave frequencies and mood. For example, alpha waves (8-14 Hz) occur in the brain when a person is relaxed but awake. If a person is focused and alert, beta waves (14-30 Hz) occur. There are associations with other frequencies but this should give you the idea.

The idea behind how to make this information useful is that it may be possible to “entrain” these brainwave frequencies in a person by having them listen to tones in headphones. If, say the proponents, listening to rhythmic hums beating at 10 Hz can cause alpha waves in the brain, then we can cause the relaxed feelings associated with alpha waves. We have evidence of the first direction (when a person is relaxed, alpha waves tend to occur), but whether it works in reverse (we can make alpha waves occur which will then cause relaxation) is another matter.

There are companies selling mp3s and CDs with music and sound effects mixed with binaural beats to produce a specific effect, or combination of effects. For example, there are programs for smoking cessation, stress reduction, memory improvement, meditation, losing weight, healing, etc. Wow. It really would be nice to think that all you have to do is listen to some music and you could stop smoking wouldn’t it? So what is the science behind all this?

Actually there is some science to support a proof-of-concept that brainwaves can be entrained as explained above, and that measurable changes in behavior can occur as a correlation in blind experiments (Lane JD, Kasian SJ, Owens JE, Marsh GR, Duke University, 1998 is one such). So that’s a good thing. I like actual evidence. It is logical to then assume that if binaural beats can entrain brainwaves of predictable frequency followed by predictable state of mind, behaviors associated with the particular states of mind are likely.

However, there is less evidence that binaural beats can make you lose weight or quit smoking. There is anecdotal evidence for this, as there is with hypnosis doing the same thing, but let us not forget the power of the placebo effect. If someone knows they have purchased the weight-loss program CD, they are likely to already be motivated. And expectation effects could see them through to losing weight. Results that rely on that effect are not usually repeatable or consistent. Some people are just better at changing their behavior than others, I imagine.

So I think I have shown that binaural beats are not mythical. They’re definitely real. And there is some very convincing and real scientific evidence to support the possibility of brainwave entrainment to affect mood and state-of-mind. Whether those other things are possible remains to be studied. Your mileage may vary. I’d really like to see a double-blind experiment lead to better memory in the long term, or weight-loss. Then I’ll really go “all-in” with binaural beats as a useful therapy tool. Until then, at least I know my iPod can play me some alpha waves and I’ll probably relax. That’s pretty cool by itself.

Best Brow Enhancing Products of the Day

Looking good is about looking good from head to toe, and today eyebrows are the hottest feature to focus on. This is necessary because well groomed brows give your face a polished and focused look, while bushy, overgrown brows make you look unkempt and make people think you have a mono-brow instead of two eyebrows.

Here are some eyebrow products that you must have in your eyebrow makeup collection for the perfect brow shape:

• Tweezers

The ideal pair of tweezers works best on any type of facial hair, thick or thin. They are perfectly aligned and point flawlessly. Good tweezers are super efficient at grabbing the short, dark eyebrow hairs that most blunt and clumsy tweezers find difficult to grasp, giving your eyebrows sharp and precise arch lines.

• Brow Shaping Color

If you are looking for eyebrow makeup that grooms your brows without making them look artificial, then go for brow shaping color. With a mascara-like brush, the believable color is ridiculously easy to apply as you can just brush the color onto your brows naturally. It just enhances your natural eyebrow shape, makes it fuller and darker without making your brows look like they have been hideously penciled in.

• Brow Wax and Powder Combo

Get a compact with a wax and powder combo for your eyebrows. These two components are the best eyebrow products as they blend in seamlessly with your natural brows without looking made up. The combination is mistake proof and lasts until you decide to take it off. Available in a myriad of complexion friendly shades, your brows would thank you for using this product.

• Powder Eyebrow Pencil

A powder pencil gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to eyebrow makeup. It is the best tool for you if you are not steady with a brush but still want your brows to have the soft look powder gives. The texture of the pencil is unbelievably soft and smooth and the color and staying power are both exceptional. Unlike typical pencils, powder based brow pencils don’t give your brows a waxy, shiny look.

• The Complete Brow Shaping Kit

Eyebrow shaping kits make grooming your brows really easy. They are simple, easy and cheaper than buying individual products. These usually contain brow powder, highlighter and brow stencils. The stencils work best for people who aren’t that good at makeup since they are foolproof and shape your brows to perfection with minimum effort.

• Eyebrow Masks

Eyebrow masks are great if your natural eyebrows are sparse or have not been growing properly due to illness or accidents. They come with fillers, stencils, templates and diagrams so that you can completely reshape your brows, make them look as natural as possible and enhance your natural beauty.

Quick Guide to The Science of Losing Weight Naturally

Losing weight is no miracle. It takes months of effort, a good exercise plan and a diet program to get the right results. If you have been struggling with those extra pounds, there are a few things that you need to understand. In this post, we will try to understand the science and details of losing weight, without with unnatural and unhealthy diets, of course.

Don’t Believe Everything

We all want to lose as many pounds as possible at the earliest. Sadly, in the quest of dropping kilos, people end up following everything that they read or hear. No cabbage soup or alkaline diet can work for your body, unless you adopt certain essential lifestyle changes. The internet is full of hoax diets, tricks, supplements, and drugs, which promise to help without any consequences. Doctors and leading health experts always advise against such traps.

Understand The Two Components

There are two important factors for losing weight, and both are equally important – diet and exercise. Dieting doesn’t mean cutting down all the foods that you like, but it is more about eating a healthy and balanced diet. This includes the right balance between all the three macronutrients – protein, carbohydrates, and fats. If you are trying to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit diet in the first place, which will reduce the amount of carbohydrates you take each day. The next component is exercise. You cannot lose weight, unless you start exercising. You need at least one form of activity each day, which can be anything from extensive weight training to brisk walking. If you are out of shape and exercise, you can always start with light walking for an hour, which can be combined with cardio and other exercises.

Seek Help

There are some fantastic services for people looking to lose weight, and some of these follow the actual science of art loss. These are not ‘one package fits all’ kind of programs. Instead, the experts will understand your personal issues and guide you through a metabolic weight loss program, which will include all the possible aspects, including your metabolism rate, health problems, and other concerns. You will also have a personal counselor, who will offer all kinds of assistance, so that you are motivated throughout the journey. Of course, these programs can be different from each other, so you need to choose something that’s more customized. The costs typically depend on the service, but in most custom programs, the package prices are determined by the kind of assistance you need.

With exercise and diet, you can lose weight faster than you think. This inevitably requires patience and determination. Since most people start losing steam midway, there are coaches who help in staying motivated. If you have never tried an active lifestyle, it’s time for a change. Don’t delay in seeking help, because there are no secrets out there. The sooner you start, the better benefits you will get in a shorter time. Allow your body to ease!

Weight Loss With Tony Gazelle Elliptical – Possible If You Don’t Make This 1 Mistake

You’ve probably seen it on tv a bunch of times… Tony Little and his Elliptical machine called the Gazelle. So is weight loss possible with this thing? Yes, but…

First, let me say that I love elliptical machines. I think they’re way better than treadmills because they’re so easy on the joints and ligaments. Using an elliptical machine allows you to have a great low impact workout.

Second, the Gazelle would make a perfect addition to anyone who works out at home.

Now, the problem with most cardio machines such as this has to do with how they’re used, not the machines. About 98% of people make this mistake too.

So what is it?

Simply put, most people do “steady state” cardio. What that means is they do long, slow to moderate paced sessions of over 30 minutes in a row.

Well, that’s just not the most efficient way to burn fat.

A better way to use the Gazelle for weight loss is to do HIIT… which is short for high intensity interval training.

Here’s an example of how you can do it.

Using the Gazelle… get on it and start going at a slow to moderate pace for 15-20 seconds. Easy enough. Ok, now after you’re done with that, go all out… really intense… as fast as you can go. Do this for just 10 seconds.

Great! What just happened was you did your first interval. Now keep repeating that cycle for 6-10 minutes. Then get off the machine and rest… and get a drink of water.

What’s awesome about HIIT is that it’s quick and burns more fat than plain old jogging. The reason why it burns more calories and fat is because of what is called an “afterburn”. What that means is your body (after it’s done with a HIIT session) is in a hyper fat loss state.

It’s at an elevated level of fat burning. But the great part is, it stays at this elevated fat burning mode for about 18 hours after a HIIT session. That equals massive amounts of fat loss compared to jogging or walking… because once you’re done jogging, you’re done burning fat. No afterburn.

So… weight loss with the Tony Gazelle elliptical is definitely possible if you don’t make that 1 mistake. So give it a try. It’s a great piece of equipment.

Have a Sore Scalp With Hair Loss? Here’s Some Reasons Why This May Be Happening

I get an awful lot of correspondence from people who tell me that they have a very sore and painful scalp that is accompanying their accelerated hair loss. Sometimes, they also have itching, flaking, or some discoloration (red or pink scalp) that is happening also. Many people ask me why this is happening and if there is anything that they can do to fix or help with this. I will discuss both things in the following article.

Some Things That Might Cause Sore Scalp With Hair Loss: There are a few things that might be causing this condition. I will discuss them one by one. First up is telogen effluvium. This is basically aggressive shedding that can occur for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is seasonal. Other times, it is due to medical issues, stress, medications, or hormones.

Whatever the reason, the shedding is often very dramatic and troubling. What is happening is that your hair is changing it’s life span by moving from growing to resting before it was actually meant to happen. In short, the hair cycle has been interrupted and shortened. As the result, tons of your follicles are going to be going through this change at once. You can sometimes literally feel this happening. When it happened to me, I actually had specialists tell me that my pain could have been psychological because I was so worried and concerned about my hair. I just don’t buy this. I know from forums that this is quite common and the redness and pinkness that often accompany this is quite physical and evident merely by looking.

Another common cause for this is allergic or dermatological reactions of the scalp. Sometimes you use a new styling or beauty product (hair dye is a common culprit) that burns or negatively affects your scalp or causes some kind of allergic reaction. Occasionally, you will develop a new sensitivity to an old product.) The hair loss that follows is a direct reaction to this, but is often short lived once you discontinue the use of the product.

The final cause that I will discuss (and what many believe to be the most common and probable) is that the scalp is reacting to androgens. Sometimes, this is because you are at a life phase where you are genetically prone to become more sensitive to these substances. And sometimes, the hormones that would balance this are starting to wane or lessen. Other times, something in your body is over stimulating your follicles or your scalp and causing the excess androgens, oils, or sebum. Whatever the reason, the pain, redness, tightness or itching is the direct result of these androgens. And, this in turn can damage or affect your follicles’ ability to retain and grow healthy hair.

An Important Question: Did The Sore Scalp Start Before The Hair Loss Or After It?: If you can pinpoint which action came first, this can sometimes help you to uncover why this is happening. In the case of telogen effluvium and with dermatological issues of the scalp or allergic reactions, the sore scalp often comes after the hair loss. It is the action of the follicles changing cycles which makes this happen.

But, with AGA (androgenic alopecia or genetic hair loss,) the sore scalp often (but not always) comes before the hair loss. The sensitivity or the androgens appear and then, as the result of these struggles, the hair can not sustain itself as it once could because it is being continuously negatively affected. To be fair, in all of these cases, the loss of so much hair in such a short amount of time can give rise to serious inflammation that can either make things with your scalp worse or bring on the problems that this article has discussed.

So what you can do to help this situation? Well, in terms of TE, you can try your best to lessen the inflammation and to remove any trigger that is causing the shedding. For dermatological issues, you can remove the offending product. In the case of AGA, you’ll want to address both the androgens and the sensitivity. And all of these scenarios can be helped by topicals anti inflammatories to help soothe the scalp and to stimulate regrowth, without clogging the follicles.
